It's got very good characterization though and some of the most epically awesome moments in any work of fiction I've ever seen. If you're willing to stick it out, the payoff is well worth it.
Also he:
-is a sword master
-lives in constant pain (that he thinks he deserves)
-has a very... complicated love life
-hears a voice in his head (who is actually him from a past life)
-said past self became famous for going mad and murdering everyone he loved
Like I said, kinda similar to Blackjack in a lot of ways.
